My husband says that when most men think about deer hunting they probably automatically think about the type of rifle to use. He use to think about that too. His dad started taking him deer hunting when he was 10 years old. He use to talk about how great it was going to be to have his own gun! However, his dad had something else on his mind. He bought him a knife. A big knife.

My husband told me that while his mind was set on finding the right rifle for deer hunting, his dad was thinking about the kind of knife he would need. One of the things that he didn't realize about deer hunting (after all, he was only ten) is that when you shoot a deer, you need to clean it. This requires a sharp knife. His dad had already seen one of his friends be seriously wounded while deer hunting. It didn't happen by gunshot. It was because his knife was dull. He had to work too hard to clean the deer, that the knife slipped and sliced the femoral artery. His dad almost lost his friend that day, but got him to the hospital in time. He didn't want that to happen to my husband.

The first lesson about deer hunting he had to learn that year was not how to line up my sight, or where to shoot the deer, or even how to dress it out. The first lesson was how to sharpen his knife. Along with his new knife, he also bought him a honing kit and taught him how to put a perfect edge on my knife. Then they went deer hunting.

Now that my son is at the deer hunting age, guess what my husband is going to teach him? That's right. He wants him to learn the same lessons he did about deer hunting. I went on line and found a great knife for him, but couldn't find a honing kit. I went to a website that he usually buys some camping gear from called Broad Array Mall at www.broadarraymall.com. This site is definitely a broad array mall as there is a wide range of products there. After a few minutes of searching, I found a Gerber Sharpening Kit that would be great for my son. I ordered it as a gift for his first hunting trip and waited a few days before it arrived. Once it did and they started to get ready I gave it to him and they both started by sharpening their knives. My husband still has the one his dad gave him, and now my son had the one I just bought from Broad Array Mall.
