outdoor sport, camping cookware There is nothing worse then being stuck in the wilderness without flame. I am not a deer hunting survivalist who could make a fire out of twigs, brush and string but there was one occasion when some creativity and survival sense had to kick in when the lighter fell in the lake. Myself and two friends went on a outdoor sport fishing trip in the mountains of Washington. We planned on a full day fishing and then one night to cook up the catch, camp and drive home in the morning.

My friend is a smoker so while we were sitting on a raised edge along the shore he whipped out a cigarette. Not sure what happened but his butter fingers fumbled the lighter and it dropped into the lake. We had some matches at camp so we brushed it off. Problem was there was only one matchbook and somehow we failed at getting a fire going with it. It was getting cold and dark and we were hungry. The smoker, Jared came up with an idea he remembered learning about on YouTube off all places. Rummaging through the camping cookware, he found some steel wool brought to clean the dishes. He tossed it over to me and ran to the truck where he pulled out an old radio we’d brought. The boom box type. Unscrewing the bottom he grabbed a nine volt battery, took the steel wool out of my hands and started rubbing the two together. Sure enough a flame popped up and he dropped it on the kindling. Fish roasting over the camping cookware, I learned a new trick for fire and had a great time outdoor sport fishing.
